EV Sodium Battery

Availability:

Battery technology is crucial for reducing the cost of electric vehicles. The mainstream lithium battery has limited room for price reduction, as lithium is also scarce. Therefore, many companies are developing sodium-ion batteries. Sodium is much cheaper than lithium, and  the cost of sodium batteries can be reduced by at least 30% compared to lithium batteries. With the advancement and popularization of technology, it can even be reduced to 50%.

The mainstream power batteries for new energy vehicles currently include lithium iron phosphate batteries and ternary lithium batteries, but the price of lithium has fluctuated frequently in recent years.

Behind the fluctuation of lithium carbonate prices as a battery raw material is the reality of rapid scarcity of lithium resources that cannot be ignored. Global lithium resources are facing uneven distribution and limited recoverable reserves. The International Energy Agency predicted in 2022 that if relying on existing lithium mine production projects under construction, the world will face a demand gap of nearly 50% by 2030.

In recent years, sodium-ion batteries have attracted market attention due to factors such as low raw material costs, wide distribution of resources, and easy access.

As a raw material for sodium-ion batteries, it is much cheaper than the lowest price of lithium carbonate.Compared with lithium iron phosphate batteries, sodium batteries have a capacity retention rate of up to 92% in a low temperature environment of minus 20 degrees Celsius, reducing the attenuation of winter endurance. In addition, sodium-ion batteries can be charged to 80% in 15 minutes, and the charging speed is much faster than that of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Sodium-ion batteries have the characteristics of low cost, long lifespan, wide temperature range, fast charging, and high safety, but the energy density is low. Currently, sodium-ion batteries are in the mass production stage and have gradually met the conditions for installation.
